What is a Sovereign AI Cloud?
A sovereign AI cloud keeps GPUs, models, and data inside Indonesian jurisdiction. What it means technically and how to evaluate a provider.
A sovereign AI cloud is AI infrastructure whose GPUs, models, and data sit and are processed inside one country's jurisdiction, operated by a local legal entity. For an Indonesian company, that means every inference request and every piece of data sent to a model stays in Indonesia and falls under Indonesian law.
How is it different from a regular cloud?
A regular cloud can have a Jakarta region while its AI services are processed somewhere else. A sovereign AI cloud guarantees three things together: where compute physically runs, where data is stored, and which legal entity operates it.
The difference matters because many popular model APIs process requests abroad, even when the application itself is hosted in Indonesia.
| Aspect | Global cloud with a local region | Sovereign AI cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Where inference runs | May be abroad, depending on the service | In Indonesia |
| Operating entity | Foreign entity or affiliate | Indonesian legal entity |
| Governing law | Possibly more than one jurisdiction | Indonesian law |
| Billing currency | Usually USD | Rupiah |
How does it relate to the PDP Law?
Indonesia's Personal Data Protection Law (Law No. 27 of 2022) governs how personal data is processed, including transfers of personal data outside Indonesian jurisdiction. Sending customer data to a model running abroad can count as a cross-border transfer, with added obligations for the data controller.
Running a model onshore does not make a system compliant on its own. It does remove one category of risk: the data never leaves the jurisdiction.
When does a company need one?
A sovereign AI cloud is most relevant when at least one of these applies:
- The model processes personal data about customers, patients, or employees.
- A client or regulator asks for proof of data location.
- The team wants open-weight models without running its own GPUs.
- Budgets need to be fixed in Rupiah, insulated from exchange rates.
How to evaluate a provider
Look for evidence that can be verified, not marketing claims:
- Certificate number for ISO/IEC 27001, with issuer and validity.
- Legal entity operating the service, and its registered address.
- Data center location where GPUs and storage sit.
- Billing currency, and whether pricing is fixed in Rupiah.
- API compatibility, so existing code does not need rewriting.
The simplest question for any provider: in which country is my inference request processed, and who operates that server?
Where does IONext fit?
IONext runs GPU as a Service, managed inference through an OpenAI-compatible API, and open-weight model hosting from a data center in Jakarta. Workloads are operated in ORBIT, and IONA reads infrastructure signals to recommend what to do next. Against that checklist, its certificate number and data center location sit on the Security and Compliance page, and the legal entity and leadership behind it are on the About page. Teams can sign up and try it directly. System integrators taking this kind of project to bank, BUMN or government clients can work with IONext through the IONext Partner Program for system integrators.
IONext is sovereign AI infrastructure hosted in Indonesia, operated by PT Data Awan Nusantara in Jakarta. IONext provides GPU as a Service, managed inference through an OpenAI-compatible API, and open-weight model hosting, certified to ISO/IEC 27001:2022 by TÜV NORD.
